This is an unconventional piece today as it will be a series of random thoughts on my approach to this new month.
I work in quarters - think of quarterly KPIs. This approach helps me break down my long-term plan into actionable steps and something to review with enough flexibility in the year.
It’s two months to the end of the year and there is no better time to start auditing the year 2021, so one can better be prepared for 2022. Decide where next you want to be and use these next two months to spice things up or at least prepare your transition for 2022. I know many people experience this year as 2020Pro. The truth is, the life we know before 2019 is gone, and adapting to this new reality is a survival task. One of the most important skillset to get right now or ways to view work today is to be anti-fragile.
To be anti-fragile means to seek what makes you defensible against any threat. If you were to lose your job tomorrow, would you find a new job or continue living your life? What are your learnings/skills that are transferrable to another role in another company? One of the best ways to figure this out is to apply for a role outside of your company. You don’t need to leave your company but it’s a great way to assess your employability level outside the comfort of your current workplace. Who knows? The offer and the role may be more exciting and better. Plus, if you don't get invited for an interview, then it's an opportunity to do a self-assessment to plug the gaps - so you are better equipped next time.
This year is also challenging in the economic and investment landscape. It’s been a great up and down moment with many severely burnt side-eye agro investments as well as inflation eating away the gains for many. Many might have lost their money, but in all, let’s take the lessons and move on with life. Ti e mi ba wa, ireti nbe (loosely translated as when there is life, there is hope)
In conclusion, whatever it is you want a better version of; start seeking help and support where necessary. The most liberating thing you can do for yourself is to never be afraid to look foolish. Assumption of knowledge and awareness is a danger zone for growth because it denies you the opportunity to learn.
